Trademark policy

The code is open. The name says where it came from.

GIS Workbench is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence: use, change and share it freely. The name and logo are different. They tell people which builds come from the project, so that forks, plugins and products that work with GIS Workbench can always be told apart from the official releases.

In short

  • You may use the name to talk about the project, to say your work runs with or is based on it, and to share unchanged official releases.
  • You need written permission to use the name or logo for a modified version, for your own product or service, or in a way that suggests the project endorses you.
  • Forks are welcome. Give yours a different name and say it is “based on GIS Workbench”.

The marks

GIS Workbench™ is a trademark of D2Insights LLC. The policy also covers the GIS Workbench logo and app icon, the official channels below, and any other name or logo D2Insights LLC lists in the policy for the project. Generic use of words such as “workbench” or “GIS” is not covered; nobody owns those words on their own.

Section 6 of the Apache-2.0 licence says it does not grant permission to use the licensor's trademarks or product names, except to describe where the work came from. Permission to use the marks comes from this policy.

Uses that need no permission

  • Referring to the project in articles, talks, courses, videos, reviews, comparisons, bug reports and papers.
  • Describing compatibility, such as “works with GIS Workbench” or “a plugin for GIS Workbench”. Your own product name comes first and must not include “GIS Workbench”.
  • Saying where your work comes from, such as “based on GIS Workbench” or “a fork of GIS Workbench”.
  • Sharing official releases unchanged: copying, mirroring, bundling or packaging the release files byte-for-byte, with the published SHA256SUMS.
  • Community activity such as user groups, meetups and channels, named so it is clear they are unofficial.
  • Running the software, including modified builds, inside your own organisation.

Uses that need written permission

  • Shipping a modified version under the name. Any build that is not byte-for-byte an official release counts as modified.
  • Using the name in a product, service, company or project name, such as “GIS Workbench Pro”.
  • Using the name in a domain, app-store listing or package name that could be mistaken for an official one.
  • Offering a hosted service that presents itself as GIS Workbench.
  • Merchandise that carries the name or logo.
  • Suggesting endorsement, with words such as “official”, “certified” or “approved”.

Never allowed

  • Names, logos or domains confusingly similar to the marks, including misspellings and translations.
  • Registering the marks, or anything confusingly similar, as your own trademark, company name, domain or handle.
  • False or harmful use, such as tampered builds published under the name or presented as official releases.

Forks and modified builds

Choose a name and icon that cannot be confused with GIS Workbench, and change every place the app shows its name: the title, About box, Help text and the file names of the built HTML. Keep the copyright and licence notices the Apache-2.0 licence requires. Saying “based on GIS Workbench”, with a link to the repository, is encouraged. Do not publish your build with the official SHA256SUMS.

Official channels

Builds, packs, sites and accounts from anywhere else are not official, whatever they are called. Only files that match a published SHA256SUMS are official releases.

Writing the name

Write GIS Workbench: two words, capital G-I-S and W. Do not change the logo except to resize it in proportion. Where it fits, add: “GIS Workbench™ is a trademark of D2Insights LLC.”
